What redirect chains do to your site

A redirect sends the browser from one URL to another. One hop is normal, like HTTP to HTTPS or a www canonicalization. Two hops start to cost you. Three or more, and every visitor pays a latency penalty measured in hundreds of milliseconds per step while search engine crawlers stop following the chain and drop pages from the index.

Redirect chains usually grow by accident. Someone moves a page, sets up a 301, and months later another restructure adds a second redirect on top of the first. Nobody notices because the final destination still loads. But the intermediate hops stay, stacking response time and diluting link equity with each step.

Redirect types and when they matter

Not all redirects carry the same weight. A 301 (Moved Permanently) tells browsers and search engines the move is final: cache it, pass link value forward. A 302 (Found) signals a temporary move, so crawlers keep checking the original URL. Using a 302 when you mean a 301 is one of the most common SEO mistakes. Link equity stays at the old address, and search engines end up indexing the wrong URL for months before figuring out your intent.

This tool shows the status code at every hop, so you can spot a 302 hiding inside a chain that should be all 301s. Check the final destination with our HTTP status checker to confirm it returns a clean 200, and run a security headers check to verify the landing page has proper HSTS and CSP headers in place.

Why one trace is not enough

Tracing a chain once tells you the state right now. Deploys, CMS updates, and CDN configuration changes can introduce new redirects without anyone noticing. A marketing team changes a campaign URL. A developer updates route definitions in a deploy that passes CI just fine. A CDN rule misfires after a config push, and a clean one-hop redirect quietly becomes a three-hop chain that adds 400ms to every page load.

WatchCron's uptime monitoring follows redirects on every check and alerts you through Slack, email, or Telegram when response times spike or status codes change. Instead of discovering broken redirect chains from a drop in search rankings weeks later, you find out within minutes.
